Tocqueville Society

 

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society, created by United Way of America in 1972, recognizes individuals who contribute gifts of $10,000 and above. The name, Alexis de Tocqueville, was chosen in honor of the 19th century French traveler’s admiration for the spirit of volunteerism in America which he wrote about in his book, Democracy in America. The local chapter was established in 1986. Three elements of democracy which Tocqueville so admired in American society were liberty, equality and the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor. These same elements are embraced in the French phrase: "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité." Tocqueville hoped that by achieving these elements of democracy, all people would choose to pursue freedom, knowledge and prosperity – indépendence, connaissance and prospérité. To distinguish Tocqueville members who achieve higher levels of giving, special orders of recognition have been created:
